No more Welcome screen

hi.

I'm running XP Home Edition SP1.

After installing several critical updates a few weeks ago (kb891711,
kb890175, kb871250, kb833987, kb885836, kb885835, kb873339, kb873376,
kb841533, kb841356, kb840987, kb810243 (sp2), Q322011 (sp2), Q327979 (sp2),
Q814995 (sp2)) I no longer get my Welcome screen when I start my computer. It
automatically logs me in and brings me to my desktop. I never get the option
to click on my username/icon. I tried going into Control Panel/User Accounts,
but the box to show the Welcome screen is already checked. Any suggestions on
how to bring back my Welcome screen?

I can't do a System Restore. Can I try to uninstall the updates and then
re-install them? Will that cause any (bigger) problems?

Thank you.

This happened to me and when I questioned colleagues at work they suggested
that the welcome screen only comes up now if you have more than one account
on your PC. I only have one, ie. myself as administrator, so I haven't
actually tested their theory. I suppose one could make another account and
see what happens. Sounds logical though because my brother has 2 or 3
accounts on his home PC and he gets the welcome screen. Mind you, I don't
know if he has done the updates.

Hope the fact that you are not alone helps.

You can try uncheck the "show welcome screen" log off or reboot, and then
check it again and see if that helps you.

The setting was reset to default by a recent upgrade for me too, but the
other way around (I have two accounts, and use auto-logon with one of them,
and then the welcome screen popped up)

If not, you can download the Windows XP TweakUI powertoy (147 KB) from
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx, and
de-check the auto-logon option from here.

The explanation sue120502 got from her colleagues I think is the default way
it works, I'm 100% sure you can get it back the way you want it :)
