No Messenger notifications when Media Center in full-screen

CJSnet

Hi, even though I have unticked "block my alerts when running full-screen
program", when I have Windows Media Center running full-screen (and possibly
also windowed - not sure yet), I don't hear sounds or see notifications from
people trying to chat with me.

If I miss my girlfriend again trying to talk dirty to me because I'm
watching the news again I'm gonna go mad! ;)

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Greetings CJSnet,

I don't actually own Media Center, so I'm unsure 100% here, but I believe what you're seeing
is actually 'by design' in Media Center edition. If you try using Windows Messenger 4.7
instead (click Start, All Programs, Windows Messenger), I'd be interested to hear if that
client works instead.

I certainly do know some friends that have it windowed and don't seem to have a problem.

Thanks but I can't really live with a downgrade even if it did work. I'm
looking just for a solution with MSN Messenger 6.1. If it's by design, it
should have an option to disable that design. MCE informs me if someone is
on the phone and who they are, so why do the developers presume I don't want
to know if someone is on MSN and wants to talk to me via that communication
method instead?

When Media Center is running in full screen mode it is essentially in
DirectX exclusive more. Thusly many pop-up type apps will be supressed (by
design). This is the same for autoplay of Media in the CD drive and various
smart media for cameras. MCE handles certain events but not Windows
Messenger. Sorry

Can you consider this a strong suggestion that it should please? :)

I'd like to be able to truly comment on that ;-). Let's just say this has
been requested before to the product team.

Thanks. Would also be advisable to have it show my status as 'Busy'
according to my setting in Messenger options when running a full-screen
program.

At present people think I'm ignoring them, but am on the computer (not away
or busy).

Ok... see if your girlfriend shows you as Busy when you have it in
full-screen... Thanks.

Just out of interest, how come Microsoft Outlook gives me an e-mail
notification sound, but Messenger doesn't? Double standards there. Either
MCE disables all other notifications, or it disables none.

Perhaps we're talking about different things - you're saying DirectX
disables the pop-ups for Messenger. But all I really need is the sound
effect to go off so I know someone's talking to me, then I can minimize MCE
and go chat.

So my question is, if Outlook can make a noise with MCE maximized, why can't
Messenger?
