no dial-up internet connection

does anyone have an answer to this - i removed Vista and installed XP in a
new HP Pavilion 1700. Think i have all the right drivers - seems to work fine
Except it won't dial-up. Have another computer so i know it's not my service.
The modem dials but i always get the message 'you've been disconnected'. i
installed a new modem with the same results. it will connect on my brother's
cable internet but he has no phone line to test my dial up problem.
please can someone help

i have an account with MSN that i set up while connected to cable internet.
it won't dial up on my phone line. can hear it dial, hear the squeeking noise
next, but then disconnected.
could it be something in the motherboard? hp used same motherboard in
machines before vista.

So are you saying you have 1 high speed cable connection and one dial up on
same computer...?

You say it don't dial up but then say,"it won't dial up on my phone line.
can hear it dial".
