No boot up. Stuck!!

Barney

I have replaced my motherboard and CPU.
When I turned on the computer I get the Safe mode menu appear. If I try
staring in normal mode the white line runs across the bottom of the screen
then the hard drive stops running and nothing happens.
If I try in Safe mode the file names appear on screen as they are accessed
but the hard drive stops when the display drivers file is shown.
I tried booting with an emergency floppy, but I get a message saying 'file
is missing or corrupt Windows root \system\hal.dll. Please reinstall the
file.
How can I reinstall this file?
Can anyone help please.
Thanks

Boot from the XP CD and do a 'Repair Install', necessary when changing
the MB/CPU.

From what I remember, the choice is 'Install', then it will find your
existing XP install and ask if you want to rapair that insatll, or create
a new one.

Repair the existing obviously.

I thought I may have to do this but I only have Xp Pro CD and this system is
XP Home. Can I repair Home with a Pro CD?

Unfortunately not.....
What happened to the XP Home CD ?? or was this a pre-installed version where
the license was tied to the MOBO??
Seems like you need to go out and buy a retail version of XP
home.........sorry
