No boot. Stuck!!

Barney

I have replaced my motherboard and CPU.
When I turned on the computer I get the Safe mode menu appear. If I try
staring in normal mode the white line runs across the bottom of the screen
then the hard drive stops running and nothing happens.
If I try in Safe mode the file names appear on screen as they are accessed
but the hard drive stops when the display drivers file is shown.
I tried booting with an emergency floppy, but I get a message saying 'file
is missing or corrupt Windows root \system\hal.dll. Please reinstall the
file.
How can I reinstall this file?
Can anyone help please.
Thanks

If you know the correct HAL for your new CPU, you can try to install it
through Device Manager or boot to the CD and press F5 - see:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299340

However, you have made so many hardware changes that your only realistic
option is a full repair install. Boot to the CD, select to install Windows,
then select to repair the existing installation.

When you replace the motherboard on a computer and the new motherboard
is not identical to the old one then you *must* do a Repair Install of
Windows XP in order to properly configure it to work with the new
hardware.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html and please pay
particular attention to the sections about OEM versions of Windows XP.

Good luck
