Hi,

I have this problem... I have just upgraded my Win XP to
SP2 and since then, my NIC Card is not visible in Device
Manager nor Network Connections folder.... I also cannot
connect to the modem... I can only surf the net.

Can anyone help me in this pls?

Thank you
Lionel

Does it show up in "hidden devices"? - in device manager,
click "view" then "show hidden devices"

This could be a sign that your NIC drivers need to be updated. Do try
the "Show hidden devices" like anon suggested.

I did what you told me to do but the NIC card is not
showing there!( I have a common Realtek 8139/810x
Family NIC card

Wait a minute, how can you surf without your card showing up in the
Device Manager? Do you have anything listed under "Network Adapters"? In
the Device Manager, try right-clicking on Network Adapters and selecting
"Scan for Hardware Changes." What does ipconfig /all say? Tell us a bit
more about your system and how you're connecting to the internet.

Yes this is strange ... totally stange... if I cannot use the internet, I am
not posting here, right?)

If do not check 'Show all devices' I do not see any network adapters in
device manager... Even after doing "scan for hardware changes".... The thing
is that since I did an upgrade from SP1a to SP2 the settings of the network
card and Local Area Connection are still there (ip addresses, etc)...

This is my info from ipconfig/all:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : laser
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast
Ethernet NIC
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-E0-7D-C6-5D-E0
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138

Ok, about my system: I run WinXP SP2 ... I have an ADSL connection. The
modem is an Alcatel Speedtouch 530 connected via the NIC Card. The modem
acts as an internet gateway and also a router... i.e. The modem initiates
the connection with the internet and then my PC points to the modem to get
an internet connection (I hope that you are understanding me). When I said
that I cannot connect to the modem I meant that I cannot access the modem's
interface... The only way that I managed to connect to the modems interface
was by uninstalling the component called 'Internet Gateway Device Discovery
and Control Client.

Thank You
Lionel

Hi Lionel- I have the exact same problem as you, immediately after
upgrading to SP2. I can surf the web, send email, etc using my
Comcast cable internet connection and a Belkin NIC card, but the
connection does not show in Network Connections. Not a big deal
except that I have lost my other home networking connections and I
cannot re-establish these without specifying my internet connection-
which is no longer visible so I have nothing to specify in the network
setup wizard!

Oh, and to make this doubly irritating- I tried to remove the NIC card
and reboot, in plans of reinstalling it so the PC would find it- and
all this did was setoff the Windows Activiation thing, so now I have
to reactivate in 3 days.

If I can't solve the NIC card problem I will just restore my system
from a Ghost backup I made just before updating to SP2, to remedy both
the NIC card and the Activation problems. A little added security is
not worth all this headache!

Good thing that I am not the only one having this problem... hope that
Microsoft will release a hotfix for this bug!!

Two things I notice about your setup, but I can't see how they're
associated with the NIC problem.

Your subnet is huge, for most networks of this type you want the subnet
mask to be 255.255.255.0

I don't see how turning off Internet Gateway Device Discovery would
allow you to see the modem, this service is related somehow to UPnP.

Finally, the last gasp guess from me, in the device manager does your
NIC show up under "Non-plug and play devices"? If so, update the driver
for your non-Plug and Play NIC.

I know about the subnet mask that is set to 255.0.0.0 and not 255.255.255.0
but for a reason I don't know about ... My ISP and believe it or not the
computer company I used to work with told me that 255.0.0.0 is better...
this is not a joke! I know that their idea is stupid.

You told me: I don't see how turning off Internet Gateway Device Discovery
would
allow you to see the modem, this service is related somehow to UPnP.

But as i told you ... since turning that off... i can connect to the modem's
interface and have full control on it... on the other hand... if I turn on
Internet Gateway Device Discovery ... I would not connect to the modem's
interface and, although I can manage the internet connection from te PC (and
also, have a connection status icon on the taskbar)... The icon would be
jammed and if I click on it... shows that no data is flowing through the
modem... (but actually.... there is because I still can surf the net).

Also...I checked the Non plug and play drivers list... there is no NIC card
showing there.

Lionel-
I just realized I have the same chipset NIC card as you-- Realtek
RTL8139-810X.
Surely we are not the only ones having this problem, nor would this
have not come up in beta testing... but I cannot find any fixes on the
net.

Lionel

I found other people mentioning the same problem in the newsgroups:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

And no solution is given... This is ridiculous... I also found out that my
soundcard (onboard AC'97 soundcard WDM) is also missing and is found in the
hidden devices list as a microsoft audio device.... when I tried to update
it with the latest drivers of VIA ... it goes away and no sound... cannot
understand why Microsoft released SP2 with such bugs!

Or what the heck, email/phone RealTek and see what they have to say

I have communicated via chat and email with 2 different Microsoft
support "professional" persons and neither seem to have a clue what I
am talking about. I have explained it as clearly as I can and both of
them think I have a totally different problem. I am going to call
Microsoft when I get a chance...

Maybe it's time to sacrifice a chicken or pig.

Sorry I couldn't help.

I have been trying for the past 2 days to get help from Microsoft but
none of the people I have dealt with, either by phone, email, or chat,
have a solution. I just keep getting handed off from one "expert" to
the next. The most recent email I got was just a generic "Here's a
bunch of links to FAQ pages- go fix your own problem" message.

My cable modem has both USB and ethernet jacks. I installed the USB
drivers and connected the modem thru a USB port rather than ethernet.
Doing so I now have 2 network connections showing, including my
internet connection. I am either going to reconfigure everything to
use the USB port, or go buy another card. I think my problem is with
the card itself. Not that the card is broken, but XP SP2 doesn't like
it. No huge loss; I think I paid $4.99 for it...

In case you haven't already figured out-- I am giving up on solving
this problem. Mainly due to Microsoft's inability/unwillingness to
assist. But it was "fun" working on this, even if in a painful sort
of way...
