I used to use xnews, but it can not handle UTF8-headers, mozilla seems
not to be able to score so I tried emacs.
Yes, emacs, Gnus is really cool. Can do everything you want: scoring
with regular expressions, spell checking...
Using mozilla for usenet now is only because of laziness (I was surfing ...)

one is the best for me on my

Plextor 12/10/32A
Wacom Tablet
Dynalink TVConnect

HP Deskjet 710C

and the best of all is: it still works :))

I am using Xnews and am pretty happy with it :

[pros]
- very configurable scoring features
- one executable
- all the settings are made in configuration files (easy to
reinstall)
- handy searching & filtering features

[cons]
- xnews is not an offline newsreader ; if you want to be able to
read the posts while being offline, you'll need Xnews+Hamster

For windows clients that dont do UTF8 you can use:

I will go ahead and stick my slrn opinion here, does all of the above
and is musch lighter weight and IMO much 'prettier'.

Amen, brother! Let all hear the good GNUs and rejoice! I also use
Xnews, but I'm using GNUs more and more because it's my primary
newsreader in Linux, and I am comfortable with the keystrokes now. I
still need to do more with its scoring options though, especially
adaptive scoring. Xnews is definitely still one of my favourites, though.

It does it for me as well. Seemless joining of multipart binaries. All the
capability I need.

Tried Xnews for a while, couldn't get the hang. Tried agent, and I know
there are people who swear by it, but all the color coding and fonts just
put me off.

Okay, I'll be the first to admit to Outlook Express. I've tried
Xnews, 40Tude, Gravity, Free Agent and some other ones, but keep
coming back to OE. Since I only care about text and configuring
the GUI the way I want it, OE looks best to me. I think it is a
case of what you first start out with that you get used to.
You're right, of course. I started out with Free Agent and tried Xnews
and Gravity...and didn't like either at first. But I stuck it out with
Xnews because of all the glowing reviews. And I'm glad I did.

BTW, I've also used OE. Once. :)

I would have been in the dark ages if I stuck with my first 2
readers. And I use usenet for 99.9%. Rare occasion I snag a binary.

Xnews is a peice of cake to set up. OE isn't.

Do you want an online or offline reader ? If you want both, and multi
server capability, then ;
