New XP Run as Different OS Version

I think this is new to XP...

We (at work) have just recently converted almost every computer to XP
(about a year or so ago). In our account dept there is an old dos
program that they use that will only run on Win 95, not 2000 or XP.
Within XP you can right click on a file and go to properties, then
capability and run as Windows 95 (or whatever you choose).

As far as I can tell this doesn't do anything. The program still
doesn't work... Any suggestion?

Jon;
The compatibility Mode feature works very well for backwards compatibility.
But it does not work with every program.
Contact the program manufacturer for Windows XP compatibility information,
they are the experts on their program.
You could also contact other users of that program to see what they do.

Otherwise it may be time to upgrade programs.

There are two compatibility options in XP - one applies to an installed
program - the other applies to the program .EXE on the installation media.
Suggest you review "Compatibility" under Help and support.

What are you talking about? I cannot find anything about compatibility for
the program .EXE on the installation media in Help and Support. Do you have
a link or a title?

Microsoft's definition from Help and Support Glossary...
compatibility mode
[[A feature of a computer or operating system that allows it to run programs
written for a different system. Programs often run slower in compatibility
mode.]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

You can check the manufacturers website to see if they have anything that
will help you run the 16-bit app. in XP. Windows XP does not gurantee that
all programs will be backward-compatible. It would have been a different
story if you had a Windows 98 machine.
