Hi Bill, I'm still wondering why this showed up for me today since i check
for updates reg.

I saw it on my son's machine last night and didn't think much about it.

OK -- did a custom scan on the work machine I'm sitting at, and was offered
that update. And, ditto on my home machine to which I'm talking via RDP.

So--looks like this is being offered widely-maybe everyone. Don't know
what's going on.

Hi Bill,

I just boot up My PC and when finish the boot I lookt to WD and the new
Def was in place so the startup check for updates works good on this PC. ;)
This was the second update with the Look for updates at startup that
came true without problems.

Bill, went back again and still being told to install new update even after
already installed. And thanks for the come back on system restore, still
can't find a way back to april 6th.

Repeated installs are a not-uncommon problem for Windows Update. I've got
one on the machine I'm sitting at just now--a new driver for a Laserjet 1022
that's been put in several times already.

There's a KB article about it--OK--it's in the omnibus article--second one
down the list:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602/en-us

You try it on yours, and I'll try it on the laserjet driver, and we can
compare notes about what worked, or did not.

Just to be clear--you are talking about the WGA update, rather than a
Defender definition update, correct?

This update is not a defender update, a windows update that states, a
software update that the latest windows installer (msi) improves the way
updates are installed. With more and faster updates with other microsofts
programs. I don't know if this aids Defender.

I hope you did better than I did.

Since my issue is with a driver install, there's almost no useable info in
the log files about just what files are involved. I tried another update
run just to pin down the precise times, and looked in the WindowsUpdate.log
file. Everything looks successful, but another scan still brings up the
same update.

So, I tried HP's site. They claim they've done nothing to this driver since
September of 2005. I even tried Windows Update library--nothing recent.

I even went and looked at \windows\softwaredistribution\download and checked
all the subdirs to see if I could spot an HP driver--didn't succeed--the
only thing there with today's date is the WGA patch (which does have code
with current dates on them.)

I give up!

I don't understand this one. WGA is a prerequisite for Defender, but I
haven't seen issues with machines say, not updating, if that update or its
predecessor versions was not installed. It's possible that those machines
had some older version of the same update in place, though.

Hi guys...I went to Windows Updates this morning and was also offered that
download...KB892130, and when I go to add/remove, it is listed as being
installed 3-2-06??? I checked all my updates and see no other update with
that number, so beats me what it is, as I don't have Defender. Weird it
would have a March date on it, yet was installed today. Oh well, got to love
this modern technology...:)

Just checked my Windows History, and yes, that same number was installed on
March 2nd. Ya got me what is going on....??????????

I looked at the code files contained in the update, and they have recent
dates. So, I think this bit of code has been revised--this is not the first
time that has happened, I believe. It would be nice if they changed the
rev date on the KB article or something, though.

Went to my update history and found that update (KB892130) succeeded on
3-1-06 and discovered that definition update 1.14.1408.8 (KB915597) failed 12
times, but they are the only failures in my update history. So even after
downloading twice, I'm still being told to download this update. Maybe it's
us users who changed from the original version to the newer version (icon in
task bar).

The validation tool is not directly related to Windows Defender. I think
what we are seeing now is a revised version--that is what the information in
Windows Update says, and I've looked at the dates on the downloaded code.

I doubt that all possible causes of definition update failure are now
removed, but I think that we're in much better shape than we have been.

Hey guys,

FYI
I have in Windows/Temp a file named WGAErrLog.txt with this:

D446F964-508-80004005_D446F964-441-80004005_D446F964-508-80004005_D446F964-441-80004005_6AA6ADEF-541-80004005_D446F964-508-80004005_D446F964-475-80004005_6AA6ADEF-560-80004005_D446F964-508-80004005_D446F964-441-80004005_6AA6ADEF-573-80004005_D446F964-508-

Same here Engel. With a timestamp on it of this morning's boot-up on a
purposely non-updated KB892130 from the most recent WGA update. So it
would seem my WGA is still actively creating that error log. How'd that
make it through Quality Assurance?... Rhetorical question... I already
know the answer.
