I'm looking to replace my disappointing HP SJ3690 scanner for one that is
supported in Vista (now and future), one that would be use directly from
within "Windows Fax and Scan", preferably

Epson Perfection scanners seem to work well... My old perfection 1250
installs flawlessly, and others I've read work just as well are the 3170 and
4180 so most like any 3xxx or 4xxx series will work. Just buy from a place
with a good return policy just in case.
