HP 6310 Network connected... Visata Fax/Scan does not see as scann

G

Guest

I have an HP 6310 All-in-one on my local LAN.
I've installed the lastest downloads and hot fix from HP on the Vista
Ultimate.
Programs that use Twain scanner work fine.
MS Fax and Scan does not see it (as a scanner).
What's gives?

I don't see it there. List the steps used to configure the scanner.
Have you asked HP?

Remember, it does work with programs that use twain
Example, it works fine with MS Publisher 2007.

It is just not recognized as even being there by MS Fax-and-Scan

The 'disclaimers' are not disclaimers, but standard footnotes that if they
(1,2,3 or 4) follow a compatibility entry, they would then apply.

Good luck to you then. Open a support incident with Microsoft. You are
entitled to it if the scanning portion of your all-in-one is indeed on the
VHCL.

You do realize, the 6310 comes with its own software bundle that
includes separate scan and fax components?

I can confirm, the Vista scan and fax applet doesn't see the 6310 but
this is probably a driver related issue. While twain compatible
applications work with the 6310, perhaps HP didn't include WIA
functionality which would have allowed the printer to run using the
Vista applet and a simple driver installation as opposed to having to
install the entire HP bundle.

I had a talk with one of the principle devs on the Windows Fax & Scan (WFS)
yesterday. It turns out that TWAIN is being depricated in favor of Windows
Image Aquisition (WIA) and WIA 2. Here's the gist of what will work:

Older TWAIN applications will continue to work with TWAIN drivers on Vista.
These TWAIN apps should also work with WIA 1 & 2 drivers due to a
compatibility layer in Vista.

Any application developed using WIA and WIA 2 will only work with WIA 1 & 2
drivers, but will not see or use devices that have TWAIN drivers. WFS is a
WIA 2 application, and thus it does not see anything installed with TWAIN.

Some manufacturers have multiple drivers available for particular devices,
so check thier web sites for updates.

Thanks for the confirmation -- I think those of us with scanners (or all-in-
ones if there are any) that use TWAIN already knew this.

What I did find back in W2K days was that I had to Disable the WIA service in
order to get the HP SJ5P scanner working but that once I got it working I
could re-enable WIA if other applications or devices needed it.

I finally got Windows Fax and Scan to recognize the scanner function of my
networked HP 6510 All-In-One printer by additionally connecting the printer
directly to my PC via USB cable. Suddenly it installed features and/or
options that never installed themselves when using the latest installation
disk. And suddenly the scanner was recognized by Windows Fax and Scan.
Amazingly, the system seems to tolerate having both network and usb
connections between the printer and pc. (And I can still print from another
pc that's on the network. )

The only thing is, when I hooked up that USB cable, it installed additional
representations of the printer in the Printers area. (Such that I have 2
icons representing the printer, and 2 icons representing the scanner portion
of the printer. And each second icon has "(Copy 1)" after the name.)

I'm not sure if I'd lose the new functionality (access to the scanner) if I
removed one set of printers from the Printers area, so I've just left them
both in there. But at least I can finally have my cake (networked printer)
and eat it (scanner recognized) too.

That is good news although I don't fully understand the route! I think
it may be what I've been saying -- you must install the manufacturer's
software with driver with the device unplugged and then plug it in
later, when as you say Windows does its thing and says I have found new
hardware and the latest software is there already so I won't use my own
stripped down version.

I'm glad it works in Fax & Scan.

Someone may be able to tell you if you delete such an icon whether it
goes into the Recycle bin, as desktop icons do, and could thus be
restored. Have you tried each icon and seen whether you get the same
facilities?

If I were uncertain I'd delete the older icons and then rename the
later ones by removing "Copy 1" -- see what others say about this.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. When I get brave (and have time to
deal with the consequences) I'll see what happens if I remove and rename some
printer icons as suggested. At this point I have 3 of everything (iconic
representations of the printer), because last week or so one fine day I
turned the computer on and it automatically installed yet another set of
printer icons (in which it added "(Copy 2)" to the name). This thing has a
mind of its own. Wouldn't let me interrupt it, etc., or it would just come
back next chance it got and reinstall itself. You can see why I'm hesitant
to mess with the durned things!

I think all the printer icons have the same potential functionality, but
I'll have to check it out some more. For now, at least I'm getting
consistent results when I leave things as they are. (And I tend to just pick
the first set of printers to print to.)

To clarify the setup (which I wasn't very clear about): Started out with a
wireless router providing internet service. The Vista PC and the HP Printer
are both close enough to the router to use ethernet cables to connect
directly to the router, so I did that. Meanwhile there's a laptop in the
other room that can connect wirelessly to the router. I like the laptop to
be able to use the HP printer sometimes, so that's why I've connected the
printer to the router rather than dedicating it/connecting it directly to the
desktop PC.

So, when I had it setup as indicated, I still wasn't getting Windows Fax and
Scan to recognize the scanner that's built into the printer. That's when I
hooked a USB cable directly between the desktop PC (the Vista PC) and the
Printer, while still leaving the ethernet cable plugged in between the
printer and the router. I was afraid it would blow up (with the printer
being connected 2 ways simultaneously), but not afraid enough not to try it,
I guess. And to my amazement it worked; Windows Fax and Scan could now see
the scanner. And both PC's can access the printer. (I just never know
when/whether it's because the eGerbils are running through the usb cable or
through the ethernet cables and router; but lights flash and things work.)

We'll see how things go from here. Thanks again for your thoughts on this.
Maybe some of this info will help others along the way too.

Wow! That sounds quite relevant. I'll check it out. Who'd of thunk there
was an article about that very thing? (But of course, in retrospect.)
Thanks a lot!

Good luck -- do tell us how you get on.

PS Another thing -- is UAC turned ON when installing the software? With
Adober Reader it has to be or you get an error about a missing temp
file.

G

Guest

No, I think I've had UAC turned off for a while. Not only was it a nuisance,
but I figured it might be getting in the way of some installations. But
that's interesting that in some cases there are errors if it's turned off!
I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks!
