HP 2710 Fax Scan Error

C

Chuck

Since I upgrade to Vista, I am unable to use the fax from the HP soluntions
center on my computer. I installed the new drivers and everything, but not
luck. HP was really no help either on this so I am checking here to see if
anyone else has problems

When i try to fax from the Soluntions center, it gives me a Fax Scan error
and will not scan the fax. Other than that everything works fine. Just
seeing if anyone else has this problem with Vista or is is HP.

THanks
Chuck

Hi,

I had a similar but not identical issue with 2610 on scan function.

To make a long story short, it is Windows Firewall for which I initially
turned it OFF (yes, OFF). And I had no 3rd party security software
installed.

The problem is solution center and Vista can't find scanner, and
interestingly, scanner is listed but no problems for copy, fax, and image
transfer.

After puzzling for a few days, I turned on Vista's firewall and manually
added each HP component to its allow list.

Viola, that's all it takes.

Normally, I would have contacted HP and blamed them for the problem, but I
didn't. Why Vista firewall blocks the access to the scanner when it is OFF,
I have no idea and care less to find out. But that tells me how
unpredictable it is..

Good luck and hope this helps.

Looking for how to do that, but not finding it at all. Can you assist
further?

Thanks

Hi,

Sure,

(1) Make sure Windows Firewall is running by checking Services under
Administrative Tools,

(2) In Control Panel, click Windows Firewall, and then click Change
Settings,

(3) Click Exceptions and then Add Programs

(4) Click Browse and then browse to where the program installed (usually -
C:\Program Files\HP)

(5) Manually select:

C:\Program Files\HP\Photosmart Essential\HP_IZE.exe
C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Product Assistant\bin\hprbui.exe
C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqdirec.exe
C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWUCli.exe

PS: You can get the above information by right-click, se HP Photosmart
Essential link in HP folder under All Programs and check for its properties.
That's how I learned which is which of each component and then added it to
the exceptions list.

Hope this helps.

Did you have to reboot to get it to work? On my fax page, some of the stuff
is missing for example, on the fax thing, is says pages in unit and the
check box that says PC Generated Cover page is missing. So not sure if the
fax scan error is the same thing. It worked fine with XP, now it is working
like crap and I am getting ready to throw it out the window lol

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.

Admittedly, I did not reboot after changes, so, I don't know if reboot is
required or not, but probably won't hurt.

And I didn't test fax since I rarely use it, but I did just now.

You are right, PC Generated Cover page is missing as I compared with the one
on the XP. I wonder if it's HP removed it.

And I tested Page in Unit, and it worked ok. I could fax it (via scan then
fax) and recipient could receive it.

For PC Generated Cover page, maybe you could try fax from within Word, and
you can do that by selecting Print function except using installed
Photosmart fax (or MS fax) as opposed to the "real" printer.

I also tested it but aborted it during dialing since it should be ok at this
point and I don't want to waste another piece of paper :)

In any case, that's what I will do if I really need to fax - from within
Word and select the fax.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Sorry that I have another question abut fax error. Can you pls help me if you
know how to fix the problem?

In the beginning, I run the fax (from my home) function smoothly. One day, I
got a notice from my computer to run "Windows update". Then, I did. After
finished, nothing happen. However, after that, I can't run the fax function
any more. It always shows "this mail can't be sent" "this media has been
protected and can't be written". I don't understand the message and don't
know how to fix the problem. Can you pls help if you know? Many thanks in
advance/Pam

Hi,

I suspect it might have something to do with the "permission", and honestly,
I'm far from an expert in this newsgroup, and I am here also to learn.

So what I will suggest you is to have a new thread and maybe you can put in
subject like - Permission problem for (device model), so that people can
easily understand it and for those with answers to assist you.

Sorry for not being more helpful and good luck.

Hi, many thanks for your advice. i will create another session with this
subject you suggest. It's helpful. Tks.

Hi,

You are very welcome and I am terribly sorry if I mislead you in the subject
line - I meant to say - Device Model is the model name of your device - such
as HP 2710 in this thread or HP Photosmart 2710.

In you case, you may wish to add some additional information about the
device, e.g. maker and model, that is having the problem.

Again, apologize for being too lazy.

Also, you may try this group which is specifically for hardware and devices:
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices

You can cross-post to the two different groups (as long as the subject is
relevant) so more people might see it and may assist you.

To do so, all you have to do is to include both groups' names in the
newsgroups field and separated by a semicolon(;).

Good luck and sorry.

Thank you very much. I am a computer idiot!! I know what you mean now.
However, my problem in fax is not in receiving but in sending out the fax.
The most strange is I could send a fax out on Apr. 30 but I couldn't send any
fax after May 1st. The only difference is just I did one thing- Windows
Update.
Anyway...thanks a lot. I will post in both areas you mentioned. Tks again.

Well after long nigths talking to HP, they say no, it is a software issue,
but since I have seen/heard alot have it missing, I suspect that it is their
error.

I can fax from the machine, but any other way, I can't. My XP machines work
fine, just a serious inconvience. Still searching for answers, cause I can't
get it to fax at all. I get the Fax scan error, please retry.

Maybe if you see something you could let me know, but I thank you in advance
for helping me.

Chuck
