New Microsoft Update Update

C

Chris

What is the new update that appears when I try to run Microsoft Update? I get
this on XP3 SP3

Do I want to install this software - Windows Update.

On VISTA is just said I need to update to the latest version.

Can you give us some details of what it says, KB number or something.
I will hazard a guess that it might be the new update for time zone changes,
but that is just a guess

Tim,

On VISTA it just said that you need to get the latest version.

On XP3 SP3 it produced a dialog box that gave uou a choice to install or not
to install. I have seen nothing in the Download Centre and there is no KB
number.

Might this be an update to th Update mechanism?--or to Windows Genuine
Advantage? Those things tend to be named in an ambiguous manner, and I
think I saw such an update sometime yesterday when working on a few
machines.

Hello Chris,

If I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the SP3 file and not
use Automatic Updates. Better order the Windows XP SP3 CD

Most people have not had problems but there are some that do.

Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not
install on XP Gold.

I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior
to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems.
Don't have any Image Backup software:
Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available)
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to
version 7.0.483.
Warning do not install ZA version 8.0.xxx as it currently has
problems.

Windows Update (Microsoft Update) was recently updated to version
7.2.6001.788 (2008-10-16). If you don't have that update, you should let
it install.

S

Stu

If it helps, I was offered a WGA update a few days back. Well it actually
came by way of a time zone update offered as a Windows software option in the
Custom menu of MU. Sneaky. Thankfully I passed the test;) Incidentally, do
you guys ever get infrequent `pop ups` from MS inviting you to take part in a
survey?

Stu

S

Stu

One more OT request. I`m using IE8 beta to view this site and have more
recently noticed the `padlock` security icon next to the address bar. Is this
cotia? The site certicate tells me its OK but was just wondering? Don`t see
it on the IE8 newsgroup.

Stu

C

Chris

This was indeed the update. Still not sure why it was offered now as it was
last updated at the end of October. Must be that I am in Canada so it got
delayed at the border.

Chris

B

Bill Sanderson

I get survey requests fairly frequently. They come from third-party
outfits, but have enough links in them that I'm reasonably sure they are
legitimate Microsoft surveys, and I usually do them if I have the time.

B

Bill Sanderson

Since I'm using NNTP, I don't see that. Is the address bar green?

If you post back a URL I'll look for myself, I am running IE8 on the machine
I'm posting from at the moment.

S

Stu

OK thanks Bill. Was just wondering. I turn them down as I`m not sure. Only
seems to appear on here. Last one told me not to minimise as it would do so
after 3 secs which it did. Got as far as the privacy statement after which
nothing else was offered. Beta software or perhaps they `timed out` on me
.......

Stu

B

Bill Sanderson

Replying via the web forum, from IE7, though.

OK - I'm sitting at my home desktop, but it is running IE7. The initial
connection via your URL went via HTTP, but when I hit the reply button, it
went to the passport login which showed a nice green bar with "protected by
verisign" on the right by the padlock. This means several things: 1) I
believe it means the session is using 256 bit encryption, and 2) it means
that verisign has taken more than the usual diligence to confirm that the
site you are being taken to is run by a legitimate entity with whom they have
current address and contact information. They also get to charge more for
the fancier certificates, naturally...

Back to the forum and the reply popup, though, I'm back in http--no green bar.

I'll plug the laptop in after dinner and run the same test on it and see how
it looks in IE8 then.

B

Bill Sanderson

OK - I think in IE8 I saw pretty much the same thing I saw in IE7--except the
green in the address bar was rather washed out--but that is probably my LCD
laptop screen versus the CRT monitor on my desktop machine.

I did see https, and the green bar, while logging in to the Live passport,
or whatever that is called at the moment, but not before or after, while
looking at the list of messages in the forum, or composing this reply in the
pop-up window.

It makes excellent sense that the login process is encrypted, but the
process of working in the forum afterwards does not seem to be.
