New install + SP2 = ntdll.dll error

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 with standard hardware on which I just
did two fresh installs. The XP Pro CD includes SP1 and most security
updates.

Anyway after installing XP SP2 the system will not boot up - get a
blue screen:
STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

System will boot into safe mode but will not into safe mode with
network support, though removing the network card after the SP2
install does not help.

I may try removing the NIC and doing a wipe seinstall again to see,
but I dunno.

Any ideas?

I have read all of the kbs on this but I am using a Dell system with
default hardware and a fresh install of XP.. Unless the install disk
is corrupted I don't what else can be done.

I may try a different install disk I suppose..

The system seems to work ok with SP1 but I am sure SP2 will get
eventually loaded onto it once I leave it with the owner..

I tried a full (not quick) format and the drive could not be
formatted.

Dell had me run some "debug" utility and run a bunch of unknown(to me)
commands which would do a low level format. They claimed it was a
registry problem but that made no sense to me.

Anyway the format worked though I have not tried SP2 yet..

I have a feeling Dell may have excluded some sectors of the hard drive
from the OS.. Just a hunch..

Did the SP2 take after the low level? If so could you please post the
commands - I am having a similar problem with a Dell Dimension 4400.

Thanks

A couple of points: This was not to do with the registry. Formatting
fully from a separate boot (eg the XP CD) removes the registry totally.
It suggests a case of bad sectors on the drive. A Full format from
booting a DOS floppy should detect such; a run of its SCANDISK
(unfortunately only on FAT 32 partitions) will detect them and mark them
as not to be used; I guess Dell provided a utility to do that

I'm getting the same error: "STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"

I had to go back the previous saved system restore point in safe
mode to get the computer running again.

I have a Dell Dimension 4500, with WinXP.

I hope there is a resolution to this.

Thanks,

yes
{Yusuf 1:56:57 PM} ok .
{Yusuf 1:57:45 PM} Let me inform you that this system will have issue
with the service pack 2.
{Yusuf 1:58:03 PM} As this system has XP home only and not XP home SP1.

{me 1:58:48 PM}so you have to load sp1 then sp2?
{me 1:58:48 PM} never had to do that before
{Yusuf 1:58:52 PM} Yes you are correct.
{me 1:58:59 PM} strange
