New IE window pops up

Hi,

I am cleaning out a friend's computer and have 1 issue remaining that will
not go away. I have used SpyBOt Search and Destroy and MaCaffe Antivirus to
find/remove a lot of junk.

The problem is when I use Internet Explorer. When I go to some sites, a
second instance of IE opens, with the target being a website that is related
in some way to the current site I visit. For example, if I go to Dell, the
new window is to Gateway. If I go to Fidelity or Vanguard, the new site is
some financial website, if I go to a writing website, the new website is also
related to writing.

There are cases when no second window opens, such as if I open my home page
(personal page located at my ISP), Yahoo, Google, or school websites (CU
Boulder, etc.)

My thought is there is some adware still lurking that has not been found. It
apparently sees where I intend to go, searches the site for content or
keywords, and then brings me to a site in some way related.

Anyone have any ideas on how to find this lurking ad monster?

Thanks.

Tom

Sounds like just popups, which are windows (advertisements) linked to
said sites. Many sites keep themselves going by selling advertising
space in this way. There are popup blockers but I haven't used any.
On a bad side i have visited a few sites containing song lyrics
recently where the popups have contained trojans, and there are others
which will try to install third party software or autodiallers.

You still have major signs of spyware, try to get to
majorgeeks web site, down the left column, go to spyware
tools, get the CW shredderand run it.

Also if you don't have it, get an IE popup stopper, such
as in the google toolbar, or MSN toolbar

A combination of anti-spyware tools are needed. One program can't do it
all.

Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should update
and run them weekly.

Cwshredder

Ad-aware SE

Spybot Search and Destroy

Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner

Pest Patrol Free Pest Scanner

If you’re still having problems after running these then run HijackThis
and post the log to one of the specialty forums, _NOT_ this one.

After your system is clean use these programs to help keep it clean:
