IE cannot display webpage

I am very frustrated. I've been trying to get onto one website which I've
always been able to do and for the last week or so I keep getting this
message. I have IE 7 and windows xp and everything is up to date. I run
McAfee security suite. I have tried everything on the solutions page except
for setting the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. I would
rather not do that. I have tried deleting sp 3 and that hasn't helped. I've
also tried deleting a couple of the security updates for IE and that hasn't
helped. Should I be deleting IE 7 and going back to IE 6? I'm really
needing to get onto that site. It is just the one site. I can get onto
others. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Been there.

Assuming that you can get to the web site with another computer...

On your computer:

Using ie - tools - general.

Delete all: Cookies, History, Temporary Internet Files.

Look for a file called HOST (no suffix) and delete it.

See if that works.

I've done the deletion of cookies ect several times but to no avail!
In another post I had read that if in your host file if the only thing that
was in there was the text that says 127.0.0.1 then that was all right. That
is all that is in the host file. Should it still be deleted? What exactly
is the host file and what happens when it is deleted? I'm illiterate when it
comes to computers!

Don't delete the Hosts file. Basically when you enter a URL (Universal
Resource Locator) a computer translates that name into the web site's
telephone number or IP Address. A Hosts file supplants or becomes
the 1st place a computer looks up a URL for IP translation.

The inability to view a site properly can be a fairly long list of issues.
A
Zone Security setting may have changed. A dependant Add-on may not
be available or be an out-of-date ActiveX. McAfee is usually responsible
as it tries to protect your machine but gets in the way of getting where you
want to go.

If McAfee is the problem, how does one go about dealing with that? At one
point, I turned off McAfee firewall and turned on windows firewall and that
didn't help me any.

I have the hotfix now in my inbox but haven't downloaded it yet. It is for
sp3! Has anyone downloaded a hotfix and had it screw up their computer?
They gave a warning that because it hasn't been fully tested yet it could do
damage. If I downloaded it and it causes problems, could I do a system
restore and go back to the way things were? Thanks for any advice!

BTW, I did do the default thing the other day and it didn't help any!

Try this, instead of using a URL open your browser and in the address
field just type:
192.216.76.50
and then press Enter, see if your site opens properly if so then do this
Click Start, Run and type IpConfig /FlushDNS [Enter]

Are you currently running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3? IE7 or IE6? (These are
just questions, not recommendations.)

How do you connect (e.g., ADSL; cable; dial-up; satellite)? Is a router
involved?

I tried that yesterday and again just now and the same message comes up.
Thanks anyhow!

I am currently running WinXP SP3 with IE7.

I am connected with broadband, I believe.

I don't believe I have a router ~ that's to connect with other computers,
right? I'm just running one computer in the house.

Two more suggestions:

START - SEARCH for any file with the word - christianbook - as part of the
file name. If you find it, delete it or change the file name.

Set a restore point. Then -

START - RUN - regedit. Search the registry for the word - christianbook -
delete them.

There is one other thing you might consider. All your Web DNS
translation is done by your ISP. You can use an alternate DNS
server and see if the URL will load.

One free DNS provider is linked below:

*Just follow the "Get Started" button for instructions.

The hotfix didn't work because my sp is more up to date. Oh well, it was
worth the shot.

Does this inability to load sites affect only this bookstore or other
ones as well ? Did you try using an alternate XP account/profile
to see if it is just your day-to-day profile that is having problems?
If another user account works then it's your profile - if not I'd still
wager that using McAfee is at the root of this problem. Just turning
off the firewall in McAfee Security Suite still leaves other parts of
it's protection enabled/running in the background.
