New Hardware Wizard Problem

I've just rebuilt my PC with XP. When I first connected my scanner the
hardward wizard found it and said 'this wizard helps you install
software for Flatbed Scanner(English)'

I tried the old software I had for my scanner but it failed to work,
not surprising.

I managed to get from my scanner supplier the W2K driver which is used
to also get the scanner working under XP.

But now I can only get the hardware wizard to come up with 'unknown
USB device'

How can I get the hardware to once again give me the screen 'this
wizard helps you install software for Flatbed Scanner(English)' which
is what my instructions tell me I need to start from?

Alan,

Sometimes after windows tried to install and failed, the device will
still be placed in the device manager. Check there and delete the entry
.. The message that you are looking for should reappear. But before
doing that, try double clicking on the device in device manager and
"update" the drivers.

Thanks Elftech

I believe I did look under Device Manager but the scanner wasnt listed
anywhere but I will check again. The only area I found an item was an
unknown USB item and I tried the update driver on that but no joy. My
instructions from scanner maker definitely say I've gotta get back to
where it finds the Flatbed Scanner(English)

I have checked Device Manager again to confirm that no scanner is
listed anywhere. What's weird is that I have used system restore to
restore my system back to well before I very first connected the
scanner but still when I connected it I cannot get the hardward wizard
to come up with the 'this wizard helps you install software for
Flatbed Scanner(English)' message. It must obviously be listed in the
system somewhere that doesnt get overwritten or wiped by a system
restore.

Any MVP's out there got any ideas about this?
