New DVD Burner

I am having difficulty installing my new DVD burner into my old operating
system. I'm not to sure on all the master and slave issues but I have heard
your DVD burner has to be a master. I currently have a DVD-ROM and a CD
Burner... why can't I get anything to work when I just switch out drives?

We could use some more details in order to help you.

1) What is your "old operating system" and is it up-to-date?
2) Are you replacing the DVD-ROM drive?
3) How are these drives currently configured (Master, Slave, Cable Select)?
4) Are both drives on the secondary IDE cable?
5) What is the model/brand of the new DVD burner?
6) Was the new burner supplied with or recommend using an 80 connector data
cable?
7) What exactly did you do when you installed the new DVD burner?
8) What was shown in the BIOS screen during bootup?
9) What was shown in the Device Manager (If you're running WinXP or Win2K)

It would be best if you followed what the other post said and give us a
little bit more information about your setup and how your computer is set
up. The device must be set to Master if it is the only device on the
controller (primary or secondary). Also, it needs to be set to Master if you
have a second device hooked up to the same controller. Usually, you put the
faster device to be the master and the slower device as slave. There is also
Cable Select which automatically selects the settings for you. To do that,
you need a a cable select ribbon, the device needs to support it as well as
your computer's BIOS.
You need to check your CMOS setup to check if its settings are correct and
if it gets detected at all.
