New computer gradually slowing down...

Casey

I got a new computer about 6 months ago, and now it is
gradually slowing down. Everything takes longer, starting
up, opening programs, surfing the net, sending/receiving e-
mails, and even shutting it down. Recently I have
Chkdsk'ed, Defrag'ed, and Disk Cleanup'ed it, and even
cleaned out the Registry in hopes of improving
performance, but it has not helped.

Any ideas??

Casey,

How about a spyware check? Spybot S&D and HijackThis (both free) are
a good idea as a regular process. Start from this article:

PCPitStop will give you a good comprehensive checkup.

Hi,

I am looking for others whose computers are exhibitting
the same problem: (And we are growing in number!)

1) recently (like in the last 2 weeks) noticed a slow-
down
2) now slows to a crawl making the computer unusable
3) when in the crawl condition, look in TaskManager:
the CPU usage is near 100% when you have NOTHING
open/running.
4) restart/reboot will temporarily cure the computer

Kathy,

Assuming that you and the growing numbers are all suffering from a
common infection, what have you done to diagnose the problem?

What is the name of the task in Task Manager which has near 100%
usage? Did you try something better than Task Manager, like Process
Explorer (free) from:
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>

Did you try SWI Forums for help:
