slowing down

Ross Evans

My computer with WindowsXP home edition over the last 6 months has
been prgressively slowing down.
I have defragmented, checked for virus's, checked that HD has
sufficient space, and have 128mb RAM. Cleaned HD for unwanted files.
Is there other things I can check to speed up the accessing of Data
process?

128MB ram is RIGHT at the bottom end of the requirement to run XP.......I
think you should upgrade to at least 256 MB if it's possible......

You are running on the bare minimum of RAM - increasing it will help.

You haven't said what processor you are using, but if your M/B can take it
an upgrade in that will also speed things up.

If your PC is relatievly low spec, things will tend to slow down more
noticeably as things like the registry, icons, running services etc
increase.

Ross;
Your amount of RAM may be part of the problem, but I don't think so. I
don't know what the problem is, but, I wouldn't just run out and buy some more.
Not a bad idea, but it probably won't fix your problem. Your machine worked
fine before, right?
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Others have already commented on the low memory. It's generally
accepted that 256 is minimum acceptable for XP, with 512 the "sweet spot".

Defragging, virus checking, and sufficient free space area ll good
things to check. Cleaning unwanted files won't affect performance at
at, but it is good housecleaning.

To help you, can you describe more about what is "slowing down". Is it
the boot-up process, it is Internet access, is it screen refreshes, is
it the time req'd to save files, is it slow mouse moving around, time to
lauch programs?

Look at the Services which you startup (run services.msc) and don't
start up any that are not needed. running services will soak up resources.

Look at programs that are launched at startup (run msconfig and keep the
startup list a minimum)

Both msconfig and services have Help files you can read more about them.

Check with a run of msconfig.exe for things running at start (on its
Startup page) and by r-clicking on the task bar and taking Task Manager
for running processes and the memory they use. You may well have had a
steady build up of things running in the background without your
knowing: and you are desperately low on memory. Spyware in particular
- get Adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com and run it to clan up, also make
sure you have up to date anti-virus and run that too
