Networking XP with 2000

K

Kevin

I have an XP computer and a Windows 2000 computer and I
am trying to network them. I have Ethernet cards in both
computers with a Netgear Router. I am also hooked up to
a cable modem through this router. Both computers have
access to the modem; however, I cannot get these
computers to share printers and files. I did the network
set up wizzard on the XP computer and it made me a disk
to run on each computer in my network. When I ran the
program on the 2000 computer, it said that the program
does not work with 2000; it only works with 98 and ME.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (e-mail address removed)

The wizard is not necessary.

How are you getting IP? Do you have unique computer names? Is the
workgroup the same? Is any firewall software disabled?

I have the same problem
all comps obtain an IP automatically
all have unique names
firewall is disabled
all are on the same workgroup

nobody on this board has a clue how to fix this other than upgrading to XP

Maybe if you described the symptoms of this 'same problem' we could help.
On the XP machine go to Start/Run and enter
\\<IPaddressofWin2kmachine>. What happens?

Yes, and have you made the files and printers shared? And do you have
identical account names and passwords?

So, are you Kevin or Earl? (O:=

I network W2K Adv Server, XP Pro, XP Home and W2K Pro on a Belkin 54G
Wireless. The W2K Pro is wireless with a Cisco PCMCIA wireless NIC. It's a
laptop. It can be done.

Do the computers obtain their IP from the router? Is it running DHCP?
Do all computers have Microsoft Networking installed in Network settings?
Can you ping each computer from every other computer by IP, name?
Do you have duplicate accounts for each workstation in your peer-peer
network?
Have you set share and file system rights on each computer that has a share
that needs to be accessed remotely?

I didn't catch if you said that you have identical account names and
passwords on the different machines.
