networking winXP to win98

Everett

I recently purchased a computer with win XP as an
operating system and I am trying to connect it to two
other computers (running win98) on a network system
(Linksys). I used the "network setup wizard" but the new
computer (winXp) still does not recognize any of the other
two computers. However, the other two computers do
recognize the new computer and they are able to access the
shared folders on the XP systems after following the
network setup wizard on the XP computer. The XP system
doesn't even pick up the other two computers in the same
workgroup. I must be missing something and I have repeated
the same steps over and over on windows XP for "connecting
to a network or workgroup" and "file and printer sharing."
I have even renamed all my computers with numbers unique
to them and still nothing. The XP computer still can not
find the computer; even when I do manual search for the
computers from the start menu. This is my first time
owning winXP and it is not starting out the way I had
hoped. Can somebody please help?

Desperate

I had the same problem. You likely need to disable XP's
firewall, which comes built-in to the system. Here's a
map: Start > Network Connections > right-click LAN >
select Properties > Advanced tab > disable firewall.
It won't give any recognition to another computer until
you do this.
