My friend has a Dell desktop that is running Windows XP Home edition. It also
has the cable modem connection to the internet. He also has a Linksys
wireless router for the laptop. He also has a Dell Laptop that was running
XP. He was able to connect to the internet & share files & print from his
printers. His hard drive crashed and he took it in the computer shop and they
installed a new hard drive and then Installed windows 2000 Pro on it. I have
the workgroups setup to MSHOME and it wont see any off the network. The
laptop also has two LAN connections that say connection unplugged. I tried
running the ICS wizzard and it says that I cant run the wizzard on the 2000
machine. How do I manually configure the XP machine and the 2000 pro so they
can see each other on the MSHOME network.

I suspect that the people who installed Windows 2000 Pro on your
friend's Dell laptop computer didn't install the correct network card
driver programs. Have him go to Control Panel > System > Hardware >
Device Manager, click the "+" sign next to "Network adapters", and
double-click each network adapter to see its status. If that doesn't
show "This device is working properly.", there's a problem that needs
to be fixed.

If the device is working properly, see if it's getting a valid IP
address from the wireless router. Linksys router's usually assign
192.168.1.x.

Why did the computer shop people install Windows 2000 Pro on a
computer that already had Windows XP? I don't know anything about the
shop, but I have to wonder whether they're reputable and whether the
copy of Windows 2000 Pro that they installed is legitimate or pirated.

If your friend has the Windows XP installation disk that came with the
Dell laptop, I recommend removing Windows 2000 Pro, installing Windows
XP, installing the Dell drivers from the driver disk that came with
the computer, and installing all available Windows Updates to bring it
up to the current level.

David,

With both computers in the same workgroup, configure the Windows 2000 computer
for automatic (dynamic) settings.

But your friend should have had Windows XP re installed. Windows 2000 has a
limited lifespan left. New products like IE V7 won't run under Windows 2000.
