Networking Desktop & Laptop XP Pro

A

Andre Da Costa

I have two computers I'm trying to network, an IBM Aptiva
Desktop and a Dell 840c Latitude Laptop, both running XP
Pro.

Basically I'm doing a NIC to NIC network with both
machines. But the main problem is the desktop. When I
plug in the CAT5e cable into the IBM, it pops up in the
system tray that its connected, then it disconnects
saying "network cable unplugged".

It goes on and off, on and off constantly, this is only
on the IBM (Desktop). I'm unable to share files and the
internet connection. I see neither computers, both have
the same workgroup name "OFFICEND", still the same
problems. I'm basically trying to share files, Internet
connection and this is after running the "Home Office
Network Wizard". The only thing I see in "My Network
Places", is the Shared Documents folder, same thing on
the laptop. I placed a file in in one of the shared Docs
in Network Places, Shared Documents, but the other
computer does not see it, which basically tells me that
both computers don't see each other.

Nothing is wrong with the Ethernet Cards in the Desktop
or Laptop, XP says both are working fine. Concerning the
Ethernet cable, wouldn't I be getting the same problem on
laptop with it popping up a baloon everytime telling me
that the Network Cable is unplugged?

I have made sure that both machines have different ip
addresses so their is no ip conflict. Please help!

Thank You
