I HAVE A DELL DESKTOP PC AND A TOSHIBA LAPTOP.BOTH HAVE WINDOWS XP
PROFESSIONAL. I WANT TO CONNECT BOTH OF THEM TO EACH OTHER SO THAT I CAN
SHARE FILES.
I HAVE INTEL PRO/1000 NETWORK ADAPTERS INSTALLED ON BOTH THE COMPUTERS.
I CONNECTED THEM USING A CROSS CABLE. AND GAVE IP ADDRESS TO BOTH OF THEM.
BUT BOTH THE COMPUTERS CANNOT DETECT THE OTHER COMPUTER. THE NETWORK
CONNECTIONS SHOW AS UNPLUGGED.
PLEASE HELP

I suspect that you used a regular network cable to connect the
computers, which would cause both of them to say that the network
connection is unplugged. You need a crossover network cable.

if you stop shouting and promise not to do this again...

go to adapter properties and set exactly same mode on both computers,
(for example, 100 mbps, half duplex, no flow control).
new lan adapters often cannot auto detect each other over a direct
cable connection.
