Network Setup error

G

Guest

I have been running the Network Setup Wizard on my XP Pro PC. I have a
D-Link Router which is connected to my cable modem. I have another PC
connected to the router. When I run the Network Setup Wizard, I get an error
message that says, Spooler SubSystem App encountered a problem and needs to
shut down. After I clear the error box, the wizard continues for a moment
but all testing proves that the network was not set up. I followed the
instructions at MS Knowledge Base for this error (which pertains to
printers) but it does not seem to apply nor does it solve the problem. Any
suggestions?

Open a command prompt and type the following, then press Enter:

NET STOP SPOOLER

Then run the network setup wizard. When it's complete, go back to the
command prompt and type the following, then press Enter:

NET START SPOOLER

That should get you set up.

Greetings Tim,

Richard's suggestion will work and is a workground by stopping the spooler
service before running the Network Setup Wizard. However, a fix is available
by obtaining the latest service pack for Windows XP. Download and install
Service Pack 2 (SP2). This will also ensure you are protecting yourself
against the latest security issues by downloading the latest updates and
fixes to known problems.

I will give that a try. His suggestion allowed me to complete the Network
Setup Wizard but I still cannot connect to the network nor can my other PC
see the old PC on the network. I tried a ping to the other PC and it failed.
Will SP2 resolve all of this?

Tim,

Do you have a personal firewall such as Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm,
or Sygate on any of the computers on the network?

Yes, I have McAfee and during some of my ping tests, I disabled the firewall.
I also started the PC in Safe Mode with Networking and tried a ping which
timed out. I believe the firewall was not enabled in the safe mode....I
think....

Eric,

I was talking to an IT person at a client's company and he helped me
discover a discrepancy in the IP addresses between the two machines and now I
can ping both directions with no losses. Thanks for your suggestions and
after I finish relocating the old machine to the new one, I will update to
SP2.
