Network Home PCs

I have two PCs (Dell 8300 and Dell 9150) running Windows XP Professional. I
have established the workgroup named "family". The Dell 9150 can see the
8300 but not the other way. The PCs are hard wired connected through a HUB.

I can connect to the Internet so I think the network card is working
correctly. I have internet service from AT&T.

I just recently had to reformat the hard drive on the 8300 and reset up the
network. Since I did the reformat, the network is not working.

Anyone got a solution?

How are your computers connected to the outside world?
The easy way is to use a router.
Next, do you have more than one firewall on either computer?
Compare the output of ipconfig/all on both computers.

The most likely thing is that you did not setup the network correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I still have the problem. The firewalls are turned
off both in Windows and Norton. The 8300 does not see the "Family"
workgroup.

My internet service provides a "box" to connect to the interent. I am just
running a very simple pc to pc network through a hub. I have compared both
PCs settings and they both look the same.

The TCI/IP is set up to obtain the address automatically.

How do you run the "ip config"?

Yeah!!!!! I got it to work. Thanks Jim for your feedback.

I did the following:

1. Went to "run" and typed in command, then ipconfig on both systems to get
the IP address of the 9150PC. I was able to ping it from the 8300.
2. Turned on/off all firewalls again.
2. Went back to Network placed on the 8300. Clicked on view workgroups
computers.

I do not know what cause the 8300 to see the network. Perhaps doing the IP
config and pinging caused the system to work.

Click Start
Click Run
Enter "cmd" (without the parentheses)
Enter "ipconfig/all"

If you wish to send the output to a file:

Enter "ipconfig/all > ipconfig.txt"

Note that the command is ipconfig with no spaces.

While you are at the command prompt, enter:

Ping <other computer name>

This command shows the times required to access the indicated computer
If the command gives up, you probably have something blocking ICMP packets.

Finally, at the command prompt, enter
net view

This will show all of the computers which the particular computer can see.

You can also execute the Network Setup Wizard on either computer, but make
no changes
When it reaches the place to save your setup to a disk, let it do so.

Take the disk to the other computer, and execute the program on the disk.
This act will
insure that the computers are setup consistently.
Then take the disk to your oothe

Finally, you should visit the web sites of Pchuck and MVP Jack (to name just
a couple) for tutorials on network
setup.
