Network Card problem after using Microsoft Update

I have a problem with a laptop I am trying to get Internet Security software
on to for a client. The software wouldn't work so uninstalled it ok.

Did Microsoft Update before trying the install again. There was an updated
driver available for the onboard 'VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter'. I
included this in the updates. MS Update installed the other downloads but
failed on the network driver. Tried downloading and installing the driver
from manufacturer (Acer) site. Install failed!

Attempted to use aEdimax USB2/Ethernet adaptor to get online with the laptop
to update the driver but that fails to install also. I get the following
message from the Hardware Update Wizard (on both the VIA and Edimax driver
installs):

"There was a problem installing this hardware:

...xxx...

An error occurred during the installation of the device.

The system cannot find the file specified"

This happens when installing drivers for both the onboard and the USB
network adaptors. The USB drivers I have used many times before.

Please help.

Have you tried the usual remedies: System restore? Roll-back of the driver?
