Network Browsing and NSLookup

J

John Barwell

Dear All,

I have two problems with my Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I have DHCP, DNS
and WINS installed and configured.

The first problem that I have is intermittent network browsing. When
navigating to my network through My Network Places -> Entire Network ->
entire contents -> Microsoft Windows Network -> MyDomain I sometimes get to
see all the computers on the network other times I can only see the server.
Can anyone shed some light on what could be happening?

The second problem I have is with nslookup. When I run the following
command: nslookup -> set type=all -> www.btinternet.com I get:

Server: server01.mydomain.local
Address: 192.168.0.2

Non-authoritative answer:
www.btinternet.com internet address = 194.73.73.113

I know when I run this type of query I should get a whois type of response,
which will include such details as the DNS servers. Can anyone help on this
one?

Many Thanks,

John Barwell

Is the server multihomed or got RRAS installed? Do you have XP clients with
ComputerBrowser service enabled? Please provide more details about the
network and server.

Regarding nslookup, you're getting exact query result as only the Internet
address when querying www.domainname record. To get the full details you
should query FQDN domain name, i.e. domainname.com, domainname.net etc.

Hi,

My server is a pretty standard setup. It does not have RRAS installed or any
XP clients connecting to it. I have WINS, DNS and DHCP installed. There are
10 clients connecting to my server. What additional information do you
require?

Thanks,

John

Your first problem is most likely related to browser elections. If you
don't have a domain controller on your network, as computers are started up
they'll force a browser election to determine which PC will hold the master
browser list. This is normally not a problem as the network is functioning
properly during this process, but browsing will be disrupted until one
computer is elected as a master browser.

You can read more about the subject here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188001

Unless browsing is essential to your needs you need take no corrective
action.

Dear Richard,

I do have a DC. However the browsing of the network is still intermediate.
Do you have any idea what could be happening?

Thanks,

John

I hope 192.168.0.1 node is the router and everything else is plugged in it
through the switch while you didn't say anything about multihomed server.
Browstat utility from the Resource kit helps investigating browsing issues.
Standard domain environment includes one Master browser (always PDC role
holder) and one Backup browser for every 34 clients. ComputerBrowser service
on other computers (clients) should be disabled.

Does the rest of the network work when browsing does not?

Check the event logs on the server and look for any unusual entries about
browser elections or the server attempting to promote itself to master
browser but being unable to do so.

Hi Richard,

I have checked the event logs and there is no unusal activity relating to
browser elections or the server attempting to promote itself to master
browser. I really cannot understand what is going on, as the diagnosis tools
and event logs are not reporting any errors.

Thanks,

Honestly I'm not sure where to go from here. You may just have to chalk
this up as one of those annoyances you put up with.
