.NET passport and XP login

M

Mohsin

I accidently associated .NET passport with another account
on my computer while bringing up Windows messenger. When I
turn on the computer, the other account now has my hotmail
e-mails status e.g. "2 un-read e-mails" etc.

I tried setting the options in messenger not to start the
messenger program, etc., while logged into that account,
and it still shows the hotmail e-mail status.

How can I dis-associate the two ?

Thanks.

Greetings M,

Firstly, to "disassociate" them, click the Start Button, then click the Control Panel. Then,
click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account name, and then on the left side
of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that
opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click 'Remove'.

However, the e-mail indication is simply an entry in the registry, and unless you actually
change it (or a program does) it stays the same. To remove it, click Start, then click Run
and enter "regedit.exe" and click OK. Then navigate (it's like Windows Explorer) to My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\yourmsnname@h
otmail.com

Where (e-mail address removed) is the passport. Double-click the MessageCount and enter 0 as
the value (this will set back to none). Then click OK, close the registry editor, and log
out.

If you want to disable this feature all together (no registry changes required), download the
TweakUI powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (see on the right).

After you have TweakUI installed, click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and
choose TweakUI for Windows XP. In the TweakUI window, on the left, click the '+' next to
Logon, and choose Unread Mail. Uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' and click OK.
