NET BIOS in windows 2000

Can anybody tell me the reason why NET BIOS naming is needed in windows
2000 server even when in Native Mode and all clients are 2000 clients. I
thought NET BIOS was only needed when NT and older OS's are present? Eg:
the domain name marksdomain.net will not be recognized by NT machines but
the NETBIOS name marksdomain will. But it seems that NETBIOS is still used
as the convention of naming folders across the network.

Can anybody help
THanks Paul

Paul,

Netbios naming is needed in Windows 2000 mostly for the sake of browsing.
For example, when users try to get to network resources through "My network
places" this uses netbios name resolution (browsing) to locate resources.
In addition, when users and/or applications use unc paths to connect to
shares, this also requires netbios name resolution.

Ultimately, Windows 2000 is far less dependant on netbios name resolution,
but we cannot get totally away from it yet.

I hope this helps.
