Changing NETBIOS Domain Name of AD Domain Controller

I'm currently running a test on upgrading my NT domains to a single Win 2000
AD domain.
The method I'm using is:
1. Migrating users and groups (including SIDHistory) from NT PDC to AD using
ADMT. (The PDCs are also file servers).
2. Formatting C: drive to remove NT OS of NT server.
3. Installing a fresh installation of Win 2000 on the exisitng C: partition
(build as a member server of the new domain).
4. Running DCPROMO on server to join the new AD domain as an additional DC.

The problem with this is that after DCPROMO, I can't change the NETBIOS
domain name. My clients are all configured to log on to the old NETBIOS
domain name. Is there any way I can change the domain name so that the
clients still log on to the same domain as they did previously?
OR,
Is there any way an alias can be set up in AD so that it knows when an
alternative name is being logged on by a client, it can still log on?
I've read briefly about UPNs. Can these be used for this purpose?

Many thanks
