Nero 6 disables CD desktop shortcut

J

Jeff Malka

Using XP Home and Nero6.
I have a shortcut on my desktop pointing to my CD drive (D:). I created it
by dragging the icon for the CDdrive D: from the "My Computer" window. The
shortcut works fine and when clicked shows the contents of the D: (CD-ROM)
drive.

However, after I use Nero 6 to write to the CD drive, the desktop shortcut
to D: no longer works and I get a message saying: "The item 'D:\' that this
shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no
longer work properly". It then gives a choice of fixing it to make it point
to an unrelated folder (first one) within C:\Program Files\ .

Yet, the malfunctioning shortcut's properties shows it to be correctly
pointing to D:\ and clicking on the original target in 'My Computer', works
just fine in opening the window showing the contents of the CD-ROM. This
shortcut (mis-)behavior persists until I reboot or recreate the shortcut by
dragging and creating a new desktop shortcut from the target icon in My
Computer.

Is this a known bug? Anything I can do about it?

My guess is that Nero is co-opting the drive. I use Nero and once you
burn a disk I've found that the best way to refresh the system so that
it reads the contents of a CD is to let Nero eject the disk, close
Nero down. Then insert the disk you want to read.

That doesn't work for your shortcut? It should.

By the way, I just read the Nero manual and saw a feature called
something like "verify disk" which when used is supposed to let you
place the just burnt disk in the drive so that Nero can compare the
burnt version with the original files on the hard drive. I've not
successfully used the feature yet, but perhaps that has something to
do with Nero not releasing the drive so that your system refreshes the
file list. Just a thought.

Hi

Your error is most likely introduced with the security update
821557 (MS03-027). If you don't want to uninstall 821557, you
can call Microsoft to obtain a fix:

Desktop Shortcut to the 3 1/2 Inch Disk Drive or to the CD-ROM Drive Does Not
Work
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;824143

<quote>
SYMPTOMS
On your Windows XP desktop, when you click the shortcut to your 3 1/2 inch
disk drive or to your CD-ROM drive, the shortcut does not work anymore.

CAUSE
This problem may occur if you have installed Windows XP update 821557:
MS03-027:

An Unchecked Buffer in the Windows Shell Could Permit Your System to Be
Compromised or Windows XP update 330836: Shortcuts to Mapped Drives on Windows
95 or Windows 98 May Not Work in Windows XP.

RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft...
</quote>

As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to
obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the
Knowledge Base Article number (Q824143) and ask for nothing more.

Myself, I just would have uninstalled the security update causing this
(KB821557), it isn't very important, take a look here for more details:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=821557
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-027.asp

(or you can wait for SP2 that will contain this fix, it should be available
sometime in the first half of 2004)

Hi Torgeir

Maybe you can help me with a problem that I'm tearing my hair out
over. My CD-ROM has sort of quit working and this thread has just
helped me tie it to NERO 6!!!

With NERO 6 Ultra [which I just installed], I can play music with
Nero's player from the CD-ROM. I can burn from it to my burner, but
that's it. If I put a disk in it that has an autostart on it, I get
an autorun application error. If I put a disk in it required by a
program, the software can't find the disk. If I put a data disk in it
and try to look at the files with Windows Explorer, a window pops up
saying "Put a disk in the drive."

Does everything you wrote below about removing security update
KB 821557 apply to my situation? Using Belarc Advisor, I can see that
I have Windows XP Hotfix KB821557 installed; however, in Window's
Control Pannel "Add/Remove Programs", 821557 is not one of the Hotfixs
shown so I can remove it. How would I do this?

Thanks

PS: Where's Porsgrunn, and how's the winter in Norway this year? I
spent 7 years in Alaska, and I miss the winter sports down here.

I doubt it, but who knows...

If this file doesn't exist

%windir%\$NtUninstallKB821557$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
or
%windir%\$NtUninstallQ821557$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

I'm afraid you can't remove it. If you got one of them, run the file.

Depends on where you are in Norway. Here in the south down at the coast, it has
been pretty mild and more rain than snow so far.

Thank you--thank you--thank you!!!!! I found and uninstalled
KB821557 and, so far, the CD-ROM and CD-RW work like they're supposed
to again.

As these fixes are discovered, do you spread them around to all the
other MVPs?

Just like Alaska--when it was -35C in Anchorage, it was 3C in Juneau.
You live in the banana belt.

Thanks again
