Hello,
Since MS has never supported camera RAW formats, I cannot see how an MS
update would change the ability to view thumbnails since that ability is
proprietary to the camera software which provides a jpg rendition of the
RAW format photo so that explorer can "see" it.
That's not true.
In Nikons RAW file there is a JPEG or TIFF thumbnail (depending on
compressed or uncompressed NEF) embedded in the images exif header, size
120x160.
Just changing the file ending to jpg instead of nef does show this
thumbnail (even with SP2). There is no need for any Nikon software to be
installed. For supporting NEF only this registry entry wass needed:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nef]
"PerceivedType"="image"
By that Windows "knows" that it is an image files and provided thumbnails
in Explorer.
Unfortunately something has been changed with SP2 by Microsoft, it won't
work anymore.
Obviously only known file types (=extensions) are now supported (allowed?)
to use the thubnail preview ability.
