NEED HELP: OfficeJet 700 with Dell running XP--

I have an Officejet All-in-one 700 series that I am trying to connect to a
Dell LAtitude that is running XP. The computer was bought within the past
year with XP loaded on it. I have followed every instruction that can be
found on the HP site. I have uninstalled and installed and uninstalled and
installed all to no avail. I have double checked the device manager and the
properties and every connection multipe times. The parralel connecting cord
is perfectly intact. Everytime I install, it attempts to print a test page.
It prints one line on the top of th epage with random characters and then a
dialog box opens that says the communication between the printer and the
computer has failed becaused of an "unassigned error--06." Then a red circle
with a line through it covers the icon in the quicklaunch bar. everytime i
try after that to test print or communication test, it fails. Can anyone
please help? I spend several hours a week on this until i become frustrated
and then give up for a week.
thanks,
d

What are the Parallel Port settings in the BIOS? Bi-Directional? EPP?

Is there no USB option on this printer?

Thanks for responding. There is no USB option on the printer. The available
BIOS settings are AT, PS/2, and ECP. It has been set to ECP. Thanks for
trying to help.
