Is the drive recognised in BIOS / POST?

I would go back to Maxblast and redo the format / partition. I know with
Western Digital software there are a few different choices due to the 160 GB
hdd size and the O/S to be installed. I believe there was one option to
format the drive to max 137 GB and then once WinXP SP1 or higher is
installed then the WDC software would then be re-run to extend the
partition(s) to access the entire 160 GB (149GB as Windows sees it of
course). My memory may be a little foggy as I went through your situation a
few months ago (partition 1 @ 60GB and partition 2 @ 100GB).

Worst case can you format and partition the first 60GB, leave the rest
unallocated, install WinXP w/SP1, then through disk management in XP format
and partition the remaining 100GB as drive D: ???

P.S. I hope your partitioning in NTFS with structure (?) of 4 (kb/sector?).
I.E. the standard configuration.

Did you remember to change the jumper on the drive from slave (secondary),
to master (primary)? Or, try CS (cable select). It it's still jumpered as
a secondary device, that is your problem.

My suggestion - if you have WinXP SP1 or greater along with a BIOS that
handles 48 bit LBA (large disk drives), then do away with the 3rd Party Max
Blast software altogether - it just adds an additional layer of overhead
that XP can work perfectly without. Note: I'm running 2 Maxtor 250GB
drives with XP Pro SP2 without any problems, and I don't use the MaxBlast
software - just used good ole XP CD and partitioned and formatted.
