MY XP Preferences - How To?

T

How can I create a desktop shortcut for the Control panel (I'm using the
"Classic" theme in XP)? I'm not sure where to find the executable file
to do this with the Send To" context command.

Is there a way to get my "C" drive to open up expanded instead of
collapsed under "My Computer" in Windows Explorer?

And while I'm at it; a non-XP question: Is there a way to get Outlook
to open with the Calendar view instead of it's default view?

Thank you for the very helpful tips. Everything now is working just the
way I want it to.

But I do have one more question:

On my old W2K system I managed to get the folders that had graphic files
(jpg, etc.) to show a thumbnail to the left of the detail listing of the
contents of that folder as shown in the right pane of Windows Explorer.
Is there such a tweak for XP?

You are welcome.

Xp shows you the preview of image and html files at left side under Details.
but it will not show the preview if:
1.The folders pane is open at the left side
2."Use Windows Classic folder" is selected in Tools > Folder Options
3.The image is not supported. Files supported : normal jpg, gif, bmp, png, ico
etc.

I guess what I'm trying to achieve is what use to be an option in W2K
under Tools > Folder Options > General tab > Web View option where you
had two options - "Enable Web content in folders" and Use Windows
classic folder". Selecting the "Enable Web content in folders" option
opened up a space on the left side of the right pane along side the list
of folders and files for the folder/file that was selected in the left
pane, and hovering the mouse above graphics files produced a thumbnail
along with file statistics (date file modified, size type, author,
etc.). Hovering the mouse over Windows versions of sound or video files
(but not Quicktime files) also would open up a miniature window for
playing them without clicking on them.

In XP, I am using the classic Windows themes, including folder views,
but I don't see the same option for enabling web content in folders in
the Tools > Folder Options dialogue box, nor do I see anything similar
anywhere. I'm hoping to duplicate the effect in XP that I described
having in W2K.

(I hope this description makes sense.)

That was removed in XP.
If you ever find a way to obtain it, let me know.
I have tried for several years.
I still have to use 98 for all my personal files for that reason.
Scrolling down a long list and just highlighting is much faster than
multiple clicks required by XP. .Also there is no preview media-miniature
player. Progress??

The closest is to switch between folders and common view, and open multiple
windows.

I found this program,I am downloading it. It will preview the image as a
tooltip when you hover a image. You can turn it ON/OFF by Scroll Lock key
[ That is of no use ].

I have a hard time with a price of $30 for such a program. I think shareware
authors do themselves a real disservice by charging so much for such a
specialized item.

If it were $5, or maybe even $10, I would probably buy it without a second
thought, but not for $30. My guess is that the author could make a lot more
money on this if he would lower the price considerably.

Agreed! If a retailer isn't making the profit he expects, in most cases,
raising the price will just send customers somewhere else to shop.
Raising the price of "doo-dads" from $1.00 each to $2.00 each isn't
going to double his profit.
