My websites homepage is set to index.htm, but when i publish it to remote
server through Frontpage it sets the homepage to index.html Why? anyone tell
me how to keep it as .htm

The remote/host server determines the default home page. In your case, they
have it set to index.html

So, either ask them to change it to index.htm or you need to change your
local home page to index.html

Surely they also have htm in the list? The default filename is usually
specified as a sequential list....

Apparently they don't have it on the list, or he wouldn't be having
problems.

FP will change the default home page to the first name in the default document list, so this user
would have to ask the host to move index.htm to be the first in the list.

The other posters have provided you the answer to your
specific question "how to keep it as .htm". I want to
address the issue of why you want to do this as I am not
sure your host will want to do what is suggested by
others.

One of the reasons for a default home page is that your
visitors only have to type "www.yourwebsite.com" to
access your website not "www.yourwebsite.com/index.htm"
or whatever.

If you provide your visitors with the website address in
the first format, "index.htm" or "index.html" becomes
academic.

Actually, that's not correct -- on some servers where index.htm is not
the first choice, FrontPage changes it to index.html anyway -- I
discovered this last year.

There is probably more than one solution but mine, after a few attempts
at changing server configurations and FP configurations, was to say,
"Fine, FP... you da boss... have it your way". Fortunately, most
backlinks to the "home page" tend to be to www.domain.com rather than
www.domain.com/index.htm anyway -- I added a line in .htaccess to take
care of the few that actually referenced index.htm.

There you go... I posted my reply above before reading this. The problem
is, of course, that unless you are the host, your host may
understandably balk at changing the server configuration for just one
site, unless of course you are the biggest baddest site in the
neighborhood...

I have always worked on Windows based servers, and I have always seen the extensions use the first
default document name in the list for the specific web site.

On Windows 2000 Server and up, the setting is per web site / hosting account and has no impacted on
other sites / accounts.
