My sound card no longer works

F

i have just had to reinstall windows, during which time
something has happened to my sound card/drivers. My sound
card is an intergrated one and therefore i cannot take it
out. My computer will no longer recognise that i even
have a sound card, yet i know it is there because it
worked before.

Any ideas of what i can do?

Under the device manager section, in the others column
there are 3 items:
Multimedia audio controller
SM Bus Controller
Universal Serial Bus(USB) Controller

is it any of these?

If in the device manager you see "other device", it means that what ever is
listed under this heading was a failed install and windows does not know
what to do with these devices. Windows makes the category "other device",
for putting things that it don't know what to do with in. Delete all things
in the "other device", and reboot your machine and windows will attempt to
reinstall the drivers for these devices, and will probably ask you for the
disk to install the drivers from. On a proper system you will never have a,
"other devices", listed.

Anything in the other devices listing, does not work as you found out. Later
on.

Yes, and remove all 3 as they are doing no good their. This means that these
3 devices are not installed proper. What kind of pc do you have..? You will
not hurt a thing by removing them, it will just make xp try again. Example
you install a new modem and the install get messed up and not working. If
you then look in the device manager you will not see the modem (in most
cases), but you will see the category, "other devices" that xp made to put
your bad install of the modem in. Now windows will never redetect your modem
to try again until you remove it or uninstall it from the "other device".
Once installed proper the category "other devices" will disappear. Now when
you reboot xp will redetect the devices you removed from, "other devices"
and give you another chance to install. Do this as many time as needed. You
will need the disk for the 3 items that you are removing. Later on, I will
be on the rest of the night.

thanks, iv removed them all from other devices, and now i
get asked to insert the disk or stae where the software
for them is installed into. the only problem is that i
have a Dell PC and when i bought it, i dint get any
discs/floppys with it that had the drivers for these on
it.so im bit stuck. If i just search google for the
drivers, will i be able to download them?

Ok, you need to do a restore with your dell disk.

Their is two ways to put the stuff back on the pc from your restore disk.

1st option will be something like "format your disk and reinstall your
software" this will erase everything and make it just like it came from the
store.

2nd option should be to reinstall all the software that came with your
machine without erasing the hard drive. You won't loose pictures or music or
anything like that.

Put the restore disk in the machine and see if anything comes up, and choose
which option you want.

If that don't work, put the restore disk in, and reboot your machine with
the disk in and the restore program comes up and do the option you want.

Sometimes you have to tell the computer to boot off the cd rom in the bios.
We will do that if the above fails.

You could do this, remove the stuff again from the device manager and reboot
the machine and when it ask for the software you could point the install
software to the proper stuff on the restore disk. But you may not know how
to do this and to long to explain.

Do you have windows fire wall running...? Or any fire wall running...?
Norton or MacAfee..?

N

Did you actually check to see if the windows fire wall is running, it might
be running by default.
