this might sound dumb but i dont think i have a sound card. i thought all
computers have to come with one? I cant play sounds, computer cant find my
integrated audio, and now i have this internal beeping sound that wont go
away.

1. is it possible to install another sound card into my computer even though
its intergrated?
2. more importantly, how do i get rid of this internal beeping that comes
from my tower.

tough questions but any help will be appreaciated.

Tell us something about your computer and we might be able to help: Make,
model, etc.
The beeping sound likely indicates an error of some kind. Any patttern to
the beeps?
I'm in favor of using capital letters to make posts more readable.

The easiest way to determine if you have a sound card is to look on the back
of your computer for microphone and speaker jacks. They should be small jacks
the size of a headphone jack. The only computers that don't have sound cards
are servers, typically.

1. is it possible to install another sound card into my computer even though
its intergrated?

Yes. You should edit your computer's BIOS settings (which can be done when
the computer first starts, before Windows starts), and disable the internal
sound card (if you have one). Then, install the new sound card, start your
computer, and let Windows XP detect the new hardware.

2. more importantly, how do i get rid of this internal beeping that comes
from my tower.

The beeping is probably the computer's internal speaker. Many desktop
computers have a terribly cheap internal speaker that is only capable of
making beeping sounds. This speaker might be used before the operating system
starts, and Windows will use it if you don't have a sound card installed. You
can probably disable this from within Windows, but I'm not sure of the exact
procedure you would use. Installing a sound card, or installing drivers for
an existing sound card, would probably also fix the problem.

Good luck.

Having similar problem. Upgraded to XP Pro and no longer have a sound come
out. Computer says no sound card or something. What do I do? Please help. Had
ME before, did Windows Advisor check and everything OK. Installed and no
longer have any sound. Needed XP to work iTunes for new iPod mini.

This is probably a sound driver problem. The easiest way to trobuleshoot this
is to:

1. Open Add Hardware in Control Panel by clicking Start, click Control
Panel, and then double-clicking Add Hardware.
2. Click Next. Windows will try to detect new Plug and Play devices.
3. Under Installed hardware, choose the device you want to diagnose and fix
(your sound card), and then click Next.
4. Click Finish to open the troubleshooter, and then follow the instructions
on the screen.

If that doesn't work, visit Windows Update to see if there are any updated
drivers:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Perform a custom install. On the left, click Select Optional Hardware
Updates, and install any sound card drivers that are available. It would be a
good idea to install other updates while you're here, too.

If that fails, you can use the Device Manager to troubleshoot the problem:
1. Click Start, click Run, type DEVMGMT.MSC, and then click OK.
2. Device Manager appears. Your sound card will probably be shown under
Sound, Video And Game Controllers with an exclaimation point. Right-click it,
click Properties,
3. Click the Driver tab.
4. Click the Uninstall button, and follow the prompts. Afterwards, click OK,
and close Device Manager.
5. Reboot Windows XP. Hopefully, it will detect your sound-card and
re-install your driver.

Thank you, it worked very well on the third piece of advice. But, it later
happened again and wouldn't work as it did the first time. Could there be
another problem more serious? Does reformatting your drive help ongoing
problems such as this?

From my windows media player I had no sound and a code # came up saying I had
files that couldn't b read. I did a restore from accessories--system tools
and then clicked system restore to 1st date before problem occurred and it
worked fine. All systems are go and all my playlists have audio and no more
corrupt files. And surely don't download no paypal or adult sites downloads

Reformatting your drive is more often than not an unnecessarily extreme
measure. A bit like blowing up your house because the flowers on the
dining room table have wilted.

Try to keep your system clean with up-to-date antivirus software,
Windows patches and regular checks with spyware detection programs.
Don't download any old free program from off the net.
