My Documents - big big headache!

M

Miriam

Have just reinstalled XP Pro on the C: drive of a partitioned h.d.
My one and only desire has always been to have *My Documents*
transferred to my D:\ data drive. The bulk of my data has all the
time been in D:\My Docs.

I've had in mind to move My Documents to D:\ then transfer all my data
from *My Docs* into *My Documents*. Not much to ask in life, is it?

I've used TweakUI 2.10 (for XP) to tell it to move My Documents to
D:\. All that has happened is that all the contents of my D:\ drive
have ended up INSIDE *My Documents* which is still in the Desktop
folder where sadly MS wants it to be.

What on earth have I done wrong? Now I'm afraid to clear all my data
out of *My Documents* in case it's all mysteriously tied up together
with the D:\ drive and my D:\ drive would get cleared out too.

Please someone show me the way out of the mess?

Hi,

I have My Documents pointing to my E drive.

Right click on the desktop icon. Click on properties. Then change target to
your D drive.

Not sure how to move everything back (cut/paste?)

I only keep Microsoft's original icons in the original My Documents.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I've used TweakUI 2.10 (for XP) to tell it to move My Documents to
D:\. All that has happened is that all the contents of my D:\ drive

Think of "My Documents" not as an actual folder but a shortcut. The target
may be a folder somewhere that also happens to be named "My Documents", but
it certainly doesn't have to be. What you did was change the target from
the original location (probably "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My
Documents\" to D:\ . If you would like to, you can change it to "D:\My
Docs\", which you are already using.
Now I'm afraid to clear all my data out of *My Documents*
in case it's all mysteriously tied up together
with the D:\ drive and my D:\ drive would get cleared out too.

That is correct. What you are seeing now _is_ your D:\ contents. It is not
a copy; what you delete will go away from both and what you add will appear
in both.
