"My Computer" slow loading file structure

When I open windows explorer, or My computer to work in
the file structure, it takes a couple of minutes for the
files to all list out. This is what I thought the Fast
Find option was for. It thought that Fast Find sorted
all the items so the speed would be faster. Any idea to
why this has just started to happen?

I am running Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP1. I have
checked all the Updates and seem to have them all.

Thanks

Jim

Many possible reasons. But FastFind has nothing to do with it. It's the search in Office's File Open dialog. Are there networks, ftp locations, or what.

I am not quite sure what you are asking. Sorry. Are you
saying that this has something to do with Office 97 on my
computer? I do not know where to look for File Open
dialog. Can you provide a bit more information?

Thanks

You do not want to use Fast Find. A clever idea that creates poor system performance!

When you open My Computer are you seeing a torch constantly shining to right and left? This can the result of a number of problems. How old is your computer? Has it only ever had Windows XP installed? Do you have a scanner -what make / model?

Are there any clues / error in Event viewer?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Links giving some information about specific Error Reports are:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

These links, however, do not contain information about each and every Error Report.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.
