slow computer

hi

i was having problems with slow performance of my Pentium2 2.4Gig desktop-
both wothin applications and downloading from the net. I thought it was a
virus-based problem and had the computer completely rebuilt, but it is still
painfully slow, especially using the internet- i have a broadband connection
and a wireless system. it used to be very fast, but now it takes five or so
seconds every time i go to a new page.

is there any diagnostic i can run to see how fast it is processing as
opposed to how fast it should be processing?

There is no standard measurement for how fast a computer should be
processing.

Top 4 reasons for slow performance:

1. Viruses and other malware.
2. Too many programs running at the same time.
3. Hardware not up to the task.
4. Misconfiguration.

You might have two or three different problems. As far as the internet
connection only is concerned, you say "it used to be very fast, but now it
takes five or so seconds every time I go to a new page."

Is your Internet Explorer cache set too high? With a broadband connection
there isn't any real need for a cache; mine is set to check for new pages
"automatically" but the cache size is set to 1MB (the minimum value). If
it's set any higher, clear the contents of the cache, clear your URL
history, reset cache size to minimum (1MB), and try again.

Have you tried testing your broadband connection speed? Try here:

thanks you all for your advice

the speakeasy speed test reveals download speeds of 80kbs (ave) and uploads
of 300kbs (ave). Is this low for broadband?

What speed are you paying for? If you are paying for more, contact your ISP>
