My co-workers receive email from the exchange server instanteously

Me: Windows XP PRO, Office 2003

When configuring the account I specified the server type as "Microsoft
Exchange Server". Schedule an automatic send/receive every 1 minute.

Co-Worker: Windows 2000, Office 2000

We get some of the same emails, and he will always get them before I do.
His computer will beep when he gets a new email. When I here a beep, I'll
press send/receive, and then I will see the email.

Why is he getting them instanteously and I have to wait for outlook to check
every minute?

Another co-worker suggested that the IMAP Server Type was the way to receive
this instant notification. Is this true?

Do you have your XP firewall enabled? Or another local software firewall?
You don't even need to use the "send/receive every x minutes" while
connected only to Exchange, anyway. Sounds like something is blocking UDP
packets for new message notification - I'll bet that if you click out of
your Inbox, to another folder, and then back to your inbox, you'll see your
items....

IMAP is not at all necessary.
