Mustek 600 III EP Scanning Problem

My Mustek 600 III EP Plus scanner worked. Notice the past
tense. I installed about a year after Windows XP and the
scanner worked for about a month. Now it doesn't! I've
tried everything, the "XP Install Fix" and nothing helps!
I get an error saying that the computer cannot find the
hardware. This is exactly what happens when I use
IrfanView, Adobe, Word, or anything to scan.
A message box pops up saying "Fail Load" and then the only
button available is OK. Then another box pops up
saying "TWAIN Error! Can't connect device or the TWAIN
driver is not installed" I installed the latest driver
from the website and I tried the driver on the CD and the
Windows 2000 driver and they all give the same error. I
have the parallel port set to EPP. I have Windows XP
Professional and I've searched and am about to throw the
scanner out at this point. Can someone help?

I don't know what your time is worth, or what your finances are like. For
me, when an antiquated component, especially a parallel port (slow data
transfer compared to USB) one gives so much trouble. It's time to upgrade.
I got a Lexmark Print Trio (USB printer, scanner, copier), which is Windows
XP compatible, at Wal-Mart for $62. It's fast, almost silent, very
configurable (will let you change the native software to open the scan to
almost any graphics program, or word processor if it's a document), and
comes with better faxing software than the native Windows XP faxing
component. The quality of the scans is very good (on glossy paper my JPGs
look like they were done at a photo finisher). BTW, it also came with a
free package of glossy paper. An added plus is the good quality of the
included OCR software. Almost all documents that I scanned to open in Word
for editing were virtually error free. I got all of that for what the
average price of 2 print cartridges would cost. By the way, the black and
color print cartridges are included. The USB cable isn't included though.
But, you can pick one up for about $5.
