I can't get my Mustek 600 III EP Plus flatbed Scanner to install. I have windows Xp home version and this old scanner that we bought 5 years ago and haven't used. I don't have an disk for it and plug n play is not working it's not reconizing it on my emachine computer. I have it plugged into the printer cable in the back that's the only place it fits.

Download and install the latest drivers for your scanner (which are Windows
XP compatible).

You can pick them up here:

Good Morning and Happy Easter,
I thought I was the only one in the world that owned Mustek 600 III EP
Plus flatbed Scanner. Guess there is at least 2 of us now. Have you
downloaded the drivers yet from the website?
http://www.mustek.com/download/driv_scanr/english/600iiieplus.html Just
curious as to what they mean in the directions ?? # Installation of this
driver requires that you log in as Administrator. Please restart your
computer and log on as Administrator, using a capital 'A', prior to
installing this driver.
Please let me know if you've figured it out.
Thanks so much, Donna J.

Hi Donna -

"Administrator" is a user name that is created when Windows XP is first
installed on your system.

Ordinarily you don't use it for much of anything as you are able to create
user accounts with Administrative privileges.

If the Mustek installer won't work from a user account with Administrative
privileges, restart your computer in Safe Mode (press and hold the F8 key
prior to the Windows XP banner appearing when you first start up your
computer and you'll receive the startup menu where you can use the up and
down arrow keys to select "Safe Mode"). At the login screen in Safe Mode,
click on the Administrator user name and supply the administrator password
(if any was entered when Windows XP was installed on your computer).

Thanks Jef, will give this a try. I know how to get into safe mode, but I
was just confused about "using a capital "A" " Once this is completed, will
this allow the Mustek to be listed in device manager then? Do you happen to
know?
Thanks so much,
Donna J.

Hi Donna -

I'm not certain how it will show up in Device Manager as I've not played
with a Parallel Port scanner in a while -- it is a non Plug-and-Play device.
I do believe it *should* show up somewhere in there... maybe under Ports |
Parallel Port, since it's connected there.

One point of advice... because your scanner is non Plug-and-Play, be certain
that you restart your computer after installing the driver and connecting
the scanner.

If you can't find it in Device Manager don't panic. Go into your image
acquisition software and see if it's listed there as an available device for
image acquisition.

I also don't believe Mustek's older scanners will show up in the Scanners
and Cameras icon in Control Panel.

One thing you need to be aware of: Windows XP will not permit you to
"piggy-back" your printer onto your scanner, like you could with Windows 98
or ME. Piggy-backed parallel port devices are not supported under Windows
XP. If you have both a parallel port printer and your Mustek Scanner,
you'll have to be certain that the device you wish to work with is connected
directly to the parallel port when you start Windows XP for it to be
properly detected. For example, if you want to scan and then print...
you'll have to connect your scanner then start up Windows XP and perform
your scan... then shut down, connect your printer and restart before you
print.

Unfortunately Parallel and Serial ports are becoming a thing of the past, in
favor of much faster interfaces, such as USB and Firewire.

Good luck and report back your results.

Well that answers the question then. It is piggybacked. I have a
connection from the PC to the Scanner then another from the Scanner to the
Printer. That's the only choice I have. I don't have a 2nd Parallel port on
my PC to hook them both up separately. Maybe I'll just reinstall it on my
old Win 95 PC.
Will let you know if I get something figured out. Thanks for your help.
