Multiple prompts for username and password

We have a web portal for documents which prompts for a username and password
when the user clicks on the link to access a document.
We have recently upgraded from Win2k SP4 to WinXP SP2, both with IE6, and
since the upgrade the users are getting prompted for a password a second time.
If you hit OK, Cancel or press Esc, the document will open.
I have tested the site using Netscape and the second prompt does not come up
so it does not appear to be the server asking for a second time.
Is there a change in the way security credentials are handled in IE from
Win2k to WinXP?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are up-to-date with patches too? I think there have been hotfixes
which may have been incidentally distributed with security updates.
Unfortunately, not all hotfixes are automatically applied by default
any more. You have to do something to get the QFE version of the
module(s) you want. E.g. notice the reference to KB824994
in the latest bulletin about a cumulative update to IE:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-042.mspx

If you're lucky some the hotfix functionality may already be incorporated
in the GDR version too. So I'd make sure I was up-to-date first;
then check for sure if there are any hotfixes with the properties you are
interested in and then see if they are actually available in those QFE
versions. Or if you have a test system I suppose you could force
apply all the QFE versions and then just test with it to see if the problem
symptom goes away in that version--simpler but less control for you
about what all you would be getting.

Good luck

Thanks Robert.

I checked and ran the updates - no change.

I have since found that the problem lies in the upgrade from Office 2000 to
Office 2003. It seems the Office2003 Web Components do not work in the same
manner as the Office 2000 ones. When the office2000 web components are
installed on the machine the document opens properly.

Thank you for your feedback though.
