On checking in "add-remove" after recent update of java i found 'runtime 5
update 10 and runtime update 8
I also have
Java 2 runtime environment SE v1.4.2.03
Do I need to keep them all or could [should] i remove all but the latest?

You should uninstall all but the latest, which is v.6.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You want the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 which is in the middle of
the page.

When installing a new version the java installer doesn't remove the old
version, I guess in case it's need for compatibility? In any event, when
installing a new version you need to first manually remove the old one.
Malke gave you the link to the most recent which is version 6.
