Multiple "A network cable is unplugged" icons appear in system tray

I recently installed a Windows security patches (KB 933360), and
shortly thereafter noticed these icons appearing in the system tray,
from a few to a few dozen. If I mouse-over the tray, they all
disappear. I don't appear to be losing my network connection in the
first place, but I can't say for sure if there isn't an intermittent
problem. Has anyone seen this issue? I don't know if the security
patch is related to the problem, but I had not installed any other
software recently. Thanks.
