A brand name would help...Either way,some cards like creative,register
thier software/drivers thru microsoft WHQL,which means if xp doesnt have
it,windows update will,if they dont digitally sign thier software, you need to
obtain it from the mfg web site.Try,getting software, save to desktop, open
device mgr, expand sound tree,R.click on all sound hardware, one at a
time,select
"uninstall",do not restart after each.Once thru,close out,shutdown
pc,power-off.
Move card to another IDE connection, start pc,once in xp,install software. If
problem continues,go to run, type:DXDIAG Run the sound Direct X tests...

For drivers, you can try the following. If you still need help,
try to figure out which of these four cards you've got.

http://zebronics.net/driverdownloads.asp

Under "Add-on Cards"

4 channel sound card - Crystal CS4281
4 channel sound card - ESS
4 channel sound card - CMedia CMI8738
6 channel sound card - CMedia CMI8738

HTH,
Paul
